Independent Financial Advice for Expats in Arnhem & Nijmegen
The Arnhem-Nijmegen corridor is the quieter sister of Brainport — same combination of high-tech research and knowledge migration, calmer housing market, different employer mix. Radboud University and the Radboudumc, HAN University of Applied Sciences, NXP Nijmegen campus, Novio Tech Campus and the broader Health & High Tech cluster bring in steady inflows of researchers, engineers and clinical staff every year. Our Arnhem office serves this corridor end-to-end: independent mortgage advice, 30% ruling guidance, Dutch tax filing. This page covers who we work with and how to start.

What we do in the Health & High Tech corridor
The work in Arnhem-Nijmegen looks similar to what we do in Eindhoven, but the client mix is different:
– Researchers and academic staff. Radboud and HAN bring in international researchers on a mix of regular employment and tenure-track contracts. The 30% ruling eligibility rules around PhD timing (the within-12-months-of-graduation rule) come up here often.
– Semiconductor and high-tech engineers. NXP Nijmegen and the Novio Tech Campus ecosystem hire engineers on knowledge-migrant contracts similar to Brainport, with similar mortgage and ruling considerations.
– Medical and clinical staff. International doctors and clinical researchers at the Radboudumc face specific issues around foreign qualifications, BIG registration and how Dutch lenders treat hospital contracts.
For all three groups the core work is the same: model the borrowing capacity, place the mortgage application with the lender that gives best terms, handle the 30% ruling and the M-form for the migration year.
How a first meeting works
The first 30-minute call is free and has no obligation. The most common reasons clients in the corridor book it:
1. Buying in Nijmegen or Arnhem. You want to model how much you can borrow before bidding. We compare lenders given your specific contract and ruling.
2. PhD-to-employment transition. You finished a Radboud PhD and are starting a Dutch employment contract within the year. The 150-km rule timing question is the most common we handle here.
3. Cross-border commute. Some clients live near the German border and work in Nijmegen or Arnhem. We handle the tax-treaty questions that come with that.
The call runs in English by video or phone. If something concrete to work on emerges, we send a fee proposal in writing. No proposal, no commitment.
What is different about the Arnhem-Nijmegen market
A few practical differences from Brainport that change how we advise:
– Less bidding pressure. Both cities have functional housing markets but rarely the bidding-war intensity of Eindhoven. You usually have room to make a considered offer.
– More variety in stock. Larger family homes are achievable on Brainport-equivalent salaries. A €470,000 budget reaches further in Arnhem than in Eindhoven.
– PhD transition cases. Radboud research economy means the 30% ruling PhD edge cases come up more often than in Brainport.
– Cross-border commuter cases. A meaningful share of Nijmegen-area staff live in Kleve, Emmerich or Kranenburg in Germany. Bilateral tax treaty rules apply.
– Slower notary cycles. Notaries in the corridor usually have shorter waiting times than in Eindhoven — useful when you need to close quickly.
The work is similar but the tempo is different. That changes negotiation strategy more than it changes the financial models.
